Commands

Discord moderation commands for every situation

Sentry's commands are grouped around what you're trying to do. Each one checks Discord's role order first, so moderators can't act on someone above them.

Member management

Remove, mute or ban members, with a DM and a case for each action.

/ban/unban/kick/softban/timeout/untimeout

/ban takes an optional duration, from 1 minute to 1 year, and lifts the ban automatically, even after a restart. /timeout goes up to Discord's 28-day limit. /softban wipes recent messages and lets them rejoin.

Warnings and infractions

A warning system that stays attached to the member.

/warn/warnings/clearwarns/history

Every warning needs a reason and shows how many the member now has. /clearwarns removes warnings only; bans, kicks and timeouts stay on record.

Channel management

Calm a channel down without touching anyone's account.

/purge/lock/unlock/slowmode

/purge deletes up to 100 messages, optionally from one user, and keeps pinned ones. /lock can unlock itself after up to 24 hours. /slowmode goes up to 6 hours.

AutoMod

Automatic Discord moderation without the hassle

Sentry's free Discord automod checks each message against simple, predictable rules. You choose which filters run. Staff with Manage Messages, and any roles or channels you exempt, are never filtered.

  • rule:spam

    Spam detection

    5 messages in 10 seconds.

  • rule:spam

    Repeated messages

The same message 3 times in a row.

  • rule:mentions

    Mass mentions

More than your limit in one message. You set 1–20.

  • rule:invites

    Discord invites

Links to other servers, including common shorteners.

  • rule:links

    External links

    Any http or https link.

  • rule:words

    Blocked words

Any word on the list you set.

  • rule:caps

    Excessive caps

Long messages that are at least 70% capitals.

  • Off by default

    You switch it on

AutoMod does nothing until you run /automod enable. Your rules are kept when you turn it off.

Escalation

Repeat offenders escalate automatically

Each AutoMod hit is a strike. Strikes fade after 10 quiet minutes, so one slip doesn't follow someone around. This is AutoMod's fixed ladder; it is separate from the commands your moderators use.

  1. First strike

    Message deleted

The member gets a DM saying why. At most one DM a minute, so a spam burst doesn't flood them.

  2. Three strikes

    Warning issued

Recorded as a warning case in their history, the same as a moderator's /warn.

  3. Five strikes

    10-minute timeout

Recorded as a timeout case, with the rule and channel that triggered it.

Cases

Keep every moderation decision organized

When every action lands in one record, any moderator can see what happened before and respond consistently. AutoMod, honeypot and anti-raid actions go into the same record.

  • Numbered cases

Every ban, kick, softban, timeout, warning and unban gets the next case number. Numbers are never reused.

  • Who and why

Each case stores the member, the moderator, the reason, any duration and the time.

  • Full member history

/history shows the 10 most recent cases, and can filter to one kind of action. /warnings shows warnings only.

  • Fix mistakes

/case reason rewrites a reason. Only administrators can /case delete a case.

Logs

Know what's happening in your Discord server

Pick one log channel with /logs setup, then switch categories on or off with /logs toggle. /logs config tells you if a missing permission or intent is limiting what gets recorded.

  • Moderation

Bans, kicks, timeouts, warnings, locks and purges.

  • Members

Joins, leaves, nicknames and role changes.

  • Messages

Deletes, edits, bulk deletes and pins.

  • Channels

Created, deleted, renamed and permission changes.

  • Roles

    Created, deleted and permission changes.

  • Server

    Settings, emojis, stickers and webhooks.

  • Voice

Joins, leaves, moves and server mutes.

Sentry needs View Audit Log to see who changed channels, roles and server settings. Edited and deleted message text needs the Message Content intent, and join and leave logs need the Server Members intent.

Appeals

Ban appeals, inside Discord

Run /appeals setup and choose a channel. From then on, the DM sent with a permanent ban has an Appeal this ban button. The member writes a short appeal, and staff get a card with Unban and Deny.

Each ban gets one appeal, and the member is told the decision by DM. Temporary bans don't get the button, because they lift themselves.

Setup

How to set up Sentry moderation

Moderation commands work as soon as Sentry joins. Logs and AutoMod take a few commands to turn on.

Full command docs →
Before you start
  • Keep Sentry's role above the members it moderates. It can't act on the server owner or anyone above it.
  • Each command needs its matching Discord permission, such as Ban Members for /ban or Timeout Members for /timeout.
  • Text filters and message logs need the Message Content intent. Without it, only the mention filter runs.
  1. 1

    Pick a log channel

Moderation actions, member changes and more are posted here. Other features use it as their fallback too.

    /logs setup channel:#mod-logs
  2. 2

    Turn on AutoMod

Shows which filters are on. Check again any time with /automod status.

    /automod enable
  3. 3

    Choose your filters

    Optional

Switch each filter on or off. For blocked words, add them first with /automod words, comma-separated.

    /automod rule rule:External links on:true
  4. 4

    Exempt a role or channel

    Optional

Run it again on the same role or channel to filter it again.

    /automod ignore channel:#memes
  5. 5

    Moderate and review

Every action is recorded. Look a member up before deciding what to do next.

Free · no paid tier

A free Discord moderation bot, with nothing locked

Every moderation command, AutoMod, cases, logs and ban appeals are free for every server. There is no web dashboard; everything is set up with slash commands in Discord.

  • Moderation commands
  • AutoMod
  • Escalation
  • Server logs
  • Case history
  • Ban appeals

Good to know

  • Rule-based, not AI

AutoMod matches simple rules. It doesn't judge tone or detect scam links from a database.

  • Fixed escalation

The delete, warn, timeout ladder can't be changed, and filters don't have separate punishments.

  • Role order applies

Neither moderators nor Sentry can act on the server owner or anyone above Sentry's role.

  • Cases can be deleted

Administrators can remove a case, so the record is only as complete as your team keeps it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can't find your answer? Ask in the support server.

01

Is Sentry a free Discord moderation bot?

Yes. Sentry has no paid tier or subscription. Moderation commands, AutoMod, cases, logs and ban appeals are available to every server.

02

What moderation commands does Sentry support?

/ban (with optional temporary duration), /unban, /kick, /softban, /timeout, /untimeout, /warn, /warnings, /clearwarns, /history, /case, /purge, /lock, /unlock and /slowmode.

03

Does Sentry have automatic moderation?

Yes. AutoMod filters spam, repeated messages, mass mentions, Discord invites, external links, blocked words and excessive caps. It is off until you run /automod enable, and you choose which filters run.

04

Can Sentry automatically warn or timeout spammers?

Yes. Each AutoMod hit is a strike. The first deletes the message, three strikes add a warning, and five strikes give a 10-minute timeout. Strikes reset after 10 minutes without a violation.

05

Can I track a user's moderation history?

Yes. /history shows a member's 10 most recent cases with reasons, and /case view shows any case in full.

06

Does Sentry support moderation logs?

Yes. /logs setup picks a channel, and you can switch moderation, member, message, channel, role, server and voice logging on or off.

07

Can banned users appeal their bans?

Yes, if you run /appeals setup. Permanent bans then come with an Appeal button in the DM, and staff can unban or deny from the appeal card.

08

How is Sentry different from Discord's built-in AutoMod?

Discord's built-in AutoMod is a good filter and works well alongside Sentry. Sentry adds the workflow around it: strikes that escalate, a numbered case for every action, member histories, server logs and ban appeals.
